PRAYER AND FASTING

Prayer is at the center of 40 Days for Life. During your campaign, you will call on people of faith in your community to fall on their knees before the Lord, asking Him to heal our land.

Each day during 40 Days for Life, individuals, churches, families and groups all over the world join together in prayer as the entire Body of Christ unites in a prayer for God’s help in healing the pain of women and innocent children in risk of abortion; men and women suffering the pain of past abortions; workers at Planned Parenthood facilities and other abortion centers; all local, regional and national leaders; and for a revival and renewal of all our churches.

Fast from certain foods. Fast from television. Fast from apathy and indifference. Fast from whatever it is that separates you from God.

PEACEFUL VIGIL

The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a focused, 40-day, non-stop, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a single Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in your community.

It is a peaceful and educational presence. Those whom God calls to stand witness during this 24-hour-a-day presence send a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility.

If you do not have an abortion facility or Planned Parenthood office in your town, you can still conduct a 40 Days for Life vigil. You will need to select another location with some strategic significance – perhaps the city hall, a courthouse, or a highly visible intersection.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Take the message of 40 Days for Life proactively to every corner of your community. Using carefully targeted news stories, talk shows, editorials and opinion pieces, your media outreach will get the message out to people who will never see the inside of a church.

Meet with local pastors, other church leaders, and members of different congregations and get them involved with the entire Body of Christ as we pray together, uniting in one focused mission that will save lives and make an eternal impact.

Your door-to-door petition and education drive will reach every household in your area. Informational flyers will raise awareness about the crisis of abortion. A petition, wristbands, yard signs and bumper stickers are other ways people can visibly demonstrate their support for 40 Days for Life.

Beginning in 2004 with a one-hour prayer meeting, a movement known as 40 Days for Life has become the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history. Their mission? Helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortion.

The people of Bryan College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M University, faced a common situation. Planned Parenthood had opened an abortion clinic some years before and thousands of children were dying as a consequence. Concerned citizens were at a loss, wondering what they could do to make a difference. They decided to pray for God’s guidance.

“And 40 days just came to us,” says David Bereit, now the organization’s national director, “it’s a timeframe God consistently uses.” At the end of their first 40-day campaign they were overwhelmed to learn the effort had resulted in a 28% drop in the local abortion rate.

By their own admission, that first effort left them exhausted and they had no intention to attempt it again. Nor did they expect anyone else would try it. However, one by one communities across the nation picked up on their success and attempted vigils of their own.

In the fall of 2007, those original organizers decided to launch 40 Days for Life as a national effort. Their expectations were modest, but the results were impressive. Shawn Carney, current 40 Days campaign director, says, “We were blown away when 89 cities in 33 states participated in that first nationally coordinated vigil.” Today, there are 40 Days for Life organizations in 500 U.S. cities and 19 foreign countries.

Now you can join too. Your participation makes a difference in the lives of thousands of babies and mothers. To get started, contact the organization below or visit 40DaysForLife.com.
